European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society

Lithuania report

The third regional core curriculum course of the year 2013 was held between the dates 14 and 15 November in Kaunas, Lithuania. The course was organized by the European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society (EPOS), Lithuanian Society of Paediatric Orthopaedics and Traumatology (LSPOT) and Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LUHS). Emilis Cekanauskas, Jolita Gintautiene and Mindaugas Gruzauskas were the local hosts and Deborah Eastwood, Muharrem Yazici, Ralph Sakkers, Ignacio Sanpera and Hakan Omeroglu were the guest faculty members. The scientific coordinator and one of the guest faculty members of the course Elhanan Bar-On could not be able to attend the course at the last minute, as he was appointed in an international medical aid organization in Phillipines. The registered number of participants was about 100 and included orthopaedic surgeons as well as pediatric surgeons. The course programme included the basic theoretical knowledge concerning pediatric fractures, pediatric hip, foot and spine disorders, infections, tumours, neuromuscular problems and limb deformities as well as interactive case discussions, presented by either the faculty members or the participants. The participants’ interest in the interactive case discussions was quite satisfactory. Besides the well organized scientific programme, the social programme including an enjoyable course dinner was impressive. The hospitality of our Lithuanian local hosts and friends was extraordinary. The results of the limited number of written feedbacks revealed that the content of this educational event was commonly considered satisfactory. Such feedbacks encourage the EPOS executive board and educational committee for organizing more educational activities. The forthcoming regional core curriculum course will be held in Bosnia-Herzagovnia in February 2014.
